Straw and Hay Bale Gardening Have you ever thought about attempting the straw or hay bale method for gardening? In this class you'll learn how to cure, plant and tend to a garden grown in bales. It is a nice alternative for those who have a temporary space for gardening. It can also be cost effective if you just want to try your hand at gardening before investing in a more permanent garden. We will discuss which plants do well, design, timing and care for this alternative method of gardening. Planting an Herb Garden Have you wanted to have a specific garden space for growing your favorite herbs? Did you know many herbs can be grown as perennials here in the Northland? Herbs can be easy to grow and you don't need a lot of space to have fresh herbs for cooking or crafting. Learn how to grow many of the herbs used in common everyday meals, salves and crafts, and take home your own herb starting kit for spring planting. Gardening for the Greater Good With the ever changing weather patterns, facing the challenges affecting a successful gardening season can be daunting. In this class we'll explore ways to better utilize methods of watering, fertilizing, and supporting the soils that are the basis for healthy plants. We will discuss ways to protect plants from severe weather, pests and disease, and the critters we must beat to our bounties. We'll talk design, utilizing vertical spaces, shade, and interplanting to better help our plants survive the abrupt changes throughout the growing season.
